Leo H. Kunkel, age 92, was called to his heavenly home on May 10, 2014, at his home in Archer County, Texas. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2014, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Olney, Texas, with Rev. Sean Reeves, pastor, officiating. Interment followed at Restland Cemetery in Olney. Arrangements were under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Leo was born April 4, 1922, in Archer County, Texas, just north of Olney, to Walter J. and Freda (Huebner) Kunkel. He was a life-long resident of Olney, where he farmed and ranched. He graduated Olney High School in 1939. He served in the United States Army Air Corp as a staff sergeant in the Pacific theater during WWII.
He married the love of his life, Frances Hubbard, April 6, 1947, in Olney, Texas. Leo was a life-long member of the St. Luke Lutheran Church of Olney where he served faithfully in every office and capacity asked of him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister Evelyn Neal, and two grandsons: Kevin Schrank, and Justin Roach.
Surviving him are his wife of their home; three children: a son, Harold Kunkel and wife Paula of Breckenridge, Texas, and two daughters: Shirley Schrank and husband Marvin of Hamilton, Texas, and Janet Croker and husband John of Lakeside City, Texas; seven grandchildren: Kandy Driver and husband Paul of Quitman, Texas, Kasey Kunkel and wife April of Hamilton, Texas, Karen Schwarz and husband Daniel of Fort Worth, Texas, Taylor Roach of Lakeside City, Texas, Brian Schrank of Hamilton, Texas, Kure Croker of Olney and Trent Croker and wife, Heather of Fort Worth; and 10 great-grandchildren: Kolten, Kain, Kase, Karsen, Dean, Caedmon, Isaac, Luke, Jentry and Kayla; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Family visitation was held Sunday, May 11, 2014, from 5-6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
