Robert "Sandy" Burkett, age 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014, at Grace Care Center in Olney, Texas. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, in the chapel of Lunn Funeral Home in Olney with Chad Edgington, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed in the Pioneer Cemetery in Graham, Texas. Arrangements were under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Sandy was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Graham, Texas, to the late Albert J. and Maggie (Worsham) Burkett. After graduating from high school, Sandy served in the United States Army during World War II. He moved to Olney in 1952 from Graham and had been employed with OPEX as a plumber from 1951 until his retirement in 1989. Sandy and Hazel Burgess were married on May 9, 1952, in Graham, Texas. She preceded him in death on July 17, 1979. He married Trula Nelson on June 28, 1980, in Archer City, Texas. She preceded him in death on Jan. 22, 1999. Sandy was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Olney where he was a greeter and would pass out bulletins each Sunday.
Sandy was preceded in death by his parents; his two wives; one brother, Jack Burkett; one sister, Frances Wilson; and one step-daughter, Barbara Owen.
Survivors include one brother, Jay Burkett and wife Martha of Graham; one sister, Joy Kelly of Wichita Falls; three grandchildren: Debbie Stock and husband Larry of Red Oak, Texas, Kim Gustafson and husband John of Plano, Texas, and Robert Owen of Bluff Dale, Texas; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his special friend, Frances Green.
The family received visitors at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at the funeral home.
