Trustees threw their support behind a request from campus administrators to increase the instructional day at Olney ISD by 15 minutes starting in the 2013-2014 school year following a brief presentation on Monday, May 13. They also heard a special report by Dr. Linda P. Villarreal, an educational consultant, regarding recommendations for programs at Olney ISD.

“The administrators were on hand to discuss extending the instructional day by 15 minutes,” Superintendent Tom Bailey said. Those present were current OES Principal Elaine Reno, OHS Principal Steve Fleming, current OJH Principal Terry Dunlap and Gunter Rodriguez, who will act as assistant secondary principal at OJH and OHS next year.

The additional 15 minutes of time has become necessary, according to the administrators, in order to allow additional time for tutorials and accelerated instruction for students who need them. After hearing the presentation, all board members gave their support to the plan, which will have all students being released from school next year at 3:35 p.m. instead of 3:20 p.m.

Trustees present were David Ickert, Chance Fite, Jamie Kulhanek, Kelly Mahler, Jeff Harvey, Len Bernhardt and Kyle Hinson.

Villarreal’s report included observations learned while she spent time on the district campus, including meetings with campus leaders, teachers, students and support staff.
