The Olney Cubs brought home a silver medal from the 2014 UIL 1A Golf State Championships last week, and Tanner Thompson won top medalist honors. Thompson, a junior, was runner-up during the 2013 tournament while living in Rankin, and helped lead the Cubs to their first state golf tournament return in several years.
On day one of the tournament, Thompson shot a 71 to lead the pack of competitors by eight strokes. Thompson’s second day score of 77 gave him a total of 148, which was just enough to keep him ahead of the runner-up medalist, Michell Downing of Happy, with a 153.
As a whole, the Cubs shot a two-day total of 673. That score included 244 strokes on day one and 329 on day two. Weimar was first with a 653, and Martin’s Mill was third with a 684.
Jesse Baze ended the tournament with a 171 (93-78), while John Sprague had a 175 (90-85), Clay Sprague had a 184 (95-89) and Carson Fite also had a 184 (90-94).
