Calvin Ward (9) dives into the end zone to score Olney's second touchdown.
For most of the first half, it appeared as though the varsity Cubs were well on their way to ending a 14 game losing streak at home versus Santo Friday, Sept. 20. However, the Wildcats took advantage of Olney's mistakes to pull ahead by the end of the first half and never looked back on their way to a 34-12 win. With the loss, Olney falls to 0-4 on the season and Santo improves to 3-1.
"I thought the kids played hard all night," Coach Hugh Farmer said. "We lined up good and played with a lot of heart."
After a slow start, the Cubs' Taylor Thomas recovered a first quarter Santo fumble and ran it back 93 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt failed, but Olney held onto a 6-0 lead. Then, in the second, Thomas hit Calvin Ward with a 15 yard pass. Ward dove across the goal line to post another six for Olney.
From there, the wheels fell off for the Cubs as Santo intercepted passes on back-to-back Olney drives and ran them back for points. With a two-point conversion and a good kick, Santo led Olney 15-12 at the half. In the second half, the Cubs were never able to get a foothold and Santo posted six more points in the third and 13 in the fourth.
