Friends and family members of the late Camille Holt gathered at Olney Community Library & Arts Center Friday, Aug. 30, for the dedication of a sculpture in her honor. Holt was an Olney Junior High English teacher for 21 years, as well as a longtime member of the Olney Library Board. Aug. 30 would have been Holt's 98th birthday.
Born in 1915 in Petrolia, Camille Johnson Holt inherited her lifelong love of books from her mother, Naomi Johnson, who had been a teacher in a one-room schoolhouse in a remote area of New Mexico. She passed her affection for books on to her own children and to the students who passed through her classroom for more than 20 years.
The sculpture was completed by Suguru Hiraide, a native of Japan who moved to the United
States to attend college. Since 2003 he has taught sculpture and metals at Midwestern State University.
